Readiness matters more than age
There is no single right age to start tackle football. Some kids are ready at ten. Some are better served waiting until they are older and stronger. What matters is physical readiness, coordination, and whether the child actually wants to play contact.
Pushing a reluctant or undersized player into full contact early rarely pays off. A player who wants to be there and has the size and skills to compete will develop faster and stay safer than one who was rushed.
Start with non-contact
Most development happens before the first tackle. Flag football, 7v7, and skills training build the footwork, catching, throwing, and football IQ that make a player effective once contact is added.
An athlete who arrives at tackle with clean fundamentals and real field awareness is both safer and better than one who started hitting early with none of it.
Signs your athlete may be ready
- They want to play contact, not just go along with it.
- They can handle structured practice and take instruction.
- They have basic football skills from flag, 7v7, or skills training.
- They are physically developed enough to give and absorb contact safely.
What we tell Durham parents
At KF Football we develop the athlete first. Our 7v7 and speed and skills programs build the foundation in a lower-contact setting, so that when a player does step into tackle, they are ready to compete and ready to stay safe.
