Flag football in Whitby

The Town of Whitby lists two football groups, and both play flag: the Whitby Lions and Durham Region NFL Flag. Each is non-contact, for ages 6 to 16.

The Whitby Lions started in 2012. Spring runs late April to the end of June, with games on Sunday afternoons. Fall games are on Sunday mornings. In fall 2026 they played at Brooklin High School, September 13 to November 1.

Durham Region NFL Flag, based in Whitby, is co-ed. It plays Saturdays, 10am to 2pm, in May and June and in September and October. Its site, checked in October 2026, says spring registration opens in January and fall registration in May.

Clarington Flag Football, an NFL FLAG league for ages 7 to 17, also takes Whitby families and plays in Courtice.

Where Whitby kids play tackle

Football Ontario lists no youth tackle club in Whitby. Its three Durham clubs are the Durham Dolphins, who play in Pickering, the Oshawa Hawkeyes in Oshawa and the Clarington Knights in Bowmanville.

In 2026 the Knights only had teams from U14 up. Tackle starts at U10 under Football Ontario's rules, and each club confirms which birth-year group a player is in.

Our Durham clubs guide has the registration status for each club.

Brooklin High School football

Durham high school football runs through LOSSA (Lake Ontario Secondary School Athletics). On LOSSA's 2026 football list, Brooklin High School is the only Whitby school.

Brooklin fielded junior and senior varsity teams in 2026. In 2025 it reached its first LOSSA senior final.

A Brooklin player with university plans can read our recruiting guide. Our invite-only 7v7 Travel Team runs January to May and is looking for 16U players.

Two Whitby players from our alumni roster

Kaleb O'Donoghue is from Whitby and went to Donald A. Wilson Secondary School. His University of Toronto roster page lists the Durham Dolphins as his previous team. His bio says he helped the Oshawa Hawkeyes win an OFSL championship.

He was Toronto's starting quarterback in 2026, his third season. In his first OUA game, on August 25, 2024, he threw for 268 yards and two touchdowns in a 31-29 win at Waterloo.

Brayden Misseri, also from Whitby, played receiver at Western for five seasons, 2021 to 2025. Saskatchewan signed him as an undrafted free agent in May 2025. The Riders' release said he did not drop a pass in 2024.

Saskatchewan released him before the 2025 CFL season opened, and he went back to Western for his fifth year. Against McMaster on September 27, 2025, he caught six passes for 101 yards and two touchdowns.
